Chicken Versus Pork: What is the Healthiest Option?
We are all aware that chicken and pork are two meats associated with lower levels of fat when compared to other options such as ham or red meat. However, which of these two lean meats is the healthier choice? Are there any additional qualities to mention? Let’s take some time to shed a bit of light on this subject.
The Bare Facts
Before we move on, it is a good idea to take a look at how each of these meats stack up from a basic nutritional point of view. We will be examining the contents of three ounces of each type in order to obtain a clearer picture. Here is how they stack up:
- Three ounces of pork contain 7 grams of fat, 25 grams of protein and 171 calories.
- Three ounces of chicken contain 2.69 grams of fat, 26 grams of protein and 128 calories.
So, it is clear to see that the relative protein content of each is comparable. Where the differences begin to emerge is when analysing the amount of fat in each. It is clear that chicken represents a better choice in terms of health. However, let’s also make it a point to mention that chicken contains fewer calories. Now that we have taken a look at three of the most important metrics, how else do these two meats differ?
Vitamins and Minerals
It would be impossible to maintain our health if we were unable to receive the proper vitamins and minerals. It turns out that each of these meats is quite unique in its own way. 100 grams of chicken serves up an impressive 104 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids; essential when lowering blood serum levels of cholesterol. Other critical substances found within this meat include niacin and a wide spectrum of amino acids.
On the other hand, pork patties are superior sources of B-complex vitamins as well as zinc (an important mineral in terms of cellular health and the production of testosterone in men). This meat is also rich in selenium; critical in terms of muscular recovery after a challenging exercise session. While the protein content is not as high, the fact that more fat is contained signifies that you will become fuller at a quicker pace. This is important if you happen to be following a diet.
These two meats are both excellent alternatives to fat-laden substances. Understanding the unique qualities of each will enable you to make an informed decision.
